Engaging Students: Learning environment

Lessons

  • Plan and prepare lessons.
  • Have a backup plan; prepare alternatives for when lessons just aren’t working.
  • Keep up to date with educational theory to keep lessons current.
  • Use time wisely.
  • Differentiate and innovate.
  • Choose homework and work on daily and long term planning that is consistent with curriculum objectives.

Engaging Students

  • Motivate students with verbal and written reinforcement as well as reward systems.
  • Plan lessons that are interesting and relevant to specific classroom situations.
  • Get outside of the classroom—there is much to learn in the school yard and neighbourhood.

Students are actively engaged in centers. They take a long time to plan and a lot of materials—but a lot can be improvised as well! Math centers are well worth the extra effort, as all students work cooperatively to improve their math skills!

Motivate students by breaking routine, getting them out of the class. There is much to learn in the area around the school!
Here, students work on writing poems inspired by fall colours and the wind.
