My Approach to Teaching

The power to learn does not lie in the hands of the teacher, but in the minds of the students…

Students need to experiment, to try new things, to make mistakes, to apply new ideas, and to make learning their own. Students and teacher alike must work together in order to learn new things. Students should see that the teacher is also fallible, can make mistakes, and doesn’t know everything—there is always more to learn!  In my classroom, students always work harder than the teacher.

My classroom approach has been modeled on the words of a great teacher:

-Ms. Frizzle

This list of Objective Verbs helps to keep the skills that I deem essential in my learners at the forefront of daily activities and lesson planning.

Students take chances to investigate and communicate about the number zero.

Students cooperate and experiment with materials to make a model to represent numbers in a way they had never seen before.
