OUTLINE

TIME

ACTIVITY

Introduction

(20 min)

We have come to the end of our unit on horror, and students should reflect on this.

We will begin with a completely student guided discussion about the unit, what was enjoyed best, what they would do differently, what they didn’t enjoy.

We will talk about what was learned, what they know now that they didn’t know before, what they did know before this unit.

They may bring up their fears and if this unit has changed them at all.

Focus

(20 min)

Students will be asked to take everything they learned about horror and the easy manipulation of feelings and apply this to the general media. They will think about movies, television, commercials and try to apply the same concepts we have gone over.

For example, the teacher may bring up style of images,

Take for example The Wolves in the Walls. Can you think of anywhere else that images are styled in a certain way to intentionally produce a tone? What about in advertisements? Could these images be styled in a way to create desire instead of fear?

Censorship,

Why do commercials show us what they show us? What don’t they show us?

And creation of emotions.

What kind of music do you hear on the news? On cartoons? On MTV?

How does this make you feel?

Closing

(20 min)

Students will now work individually.

They will write a few pages reflecting on the unit.

The teacher may write questions on the board to help guide them through their writing. They are not required to answer all or any of the questions, they are simply there to help:

What is fear?

Have your feelings towards fear and horror changed during this unit?

What did you like best about this unit? Worst? What would you do differently?

What did you learn?

What do you remember the most?

You have produced a lot of work during this unit. What are you most proud of?

How does this unit relate to the media?

How does this unit relate to you personally?

Grammar and spelling will count—they should try to write clearly and succinctly.
