OUTLINE

TIME

ACTIVITY

Introduction

(30 min)

The class will be in the computer lab.

Inform students that this activity will be to “Horrorify” a fairy tale by altering the tone using the word wall that was created in the previous lesson.

Students will type: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fairy_tales into the address bar, or Google “Wiki list of fairy tales” and click on the first link.

Students will chose a Fairy Tale from the list on Wikipedia. They will select it from the table. Each Fairy Tale has a link. They can read about it and find a synopsis by clicking this link. They can read several synopsis’s before making their choice.

Students will print the synopsis of the Fairy Tale of their choice. They will bring this back to class.

If they choose quickly and finish before their classmates, they may do more research, using Google or Wikipedia, on their Fairy Tale. They may print more material under the condition that they ask permission and that the additional material is relevant.

Focus

(~2hr)

Back in the classroom

Students will be asked to write a few sentences about their Fairy Tale.

Before they begin, they will receive further instruction:

Once they are finished describing their story, they will turn it into a horror story (for example, Three Innocent Piglets Devoured by the Savage, Ferocious Wolf). They will maintain the key plot elements and the characters. They are simply changing the tone.

This is individual work.

Their story should be at least 2 pages single spaced  OR 4 pages double spaced, to a maximum of 4/8 pages (single/double).

They have 1 hour to complete this assignment.

Those who finish early will edit using dictionary/thesaurus.

To begin these two individual activities, the teacher will write on the board:

Describe each of the following in a few sentences (1 sentence/character):

Key Plot Elements

Main Characters

Tone of the Story

Theme or Moral of the Story

Turn your Fairy Tale into a horror story.

DO NOT change the plot or the characters, ONLY THE TONE

Write 2-4 pages single spaced or 4-8 pages double spaced.

When the hour is over, students will exchange papers with a friend or neighbor for peer editing.

Students are familiar with peer editing: They will work with their editing partner to understand if something is not clear. They will attempt to underline errors in grammar and spelling. They must generate 2 positive comments and 1 suggestion for improvement.

This will take 30 minutes, and then the papers will be returned.

Closing

(~30 min)

Students have 30 minutes to edit and recopy their text.

They will submit a good copy of their work along with their intial description of their Fairy Tale.
