The best way to clarify ideas is to talk about them. When reading is an exclusively independent affair, it isn’t nearly as satisfying as being able to talk about a book with someone else who has read it. Book clubs are so popular because it turns reading into a social activity and allows people to talk about their thoughts. Students should be able to have the same sort of conversations about books. Also, the act of explaining ones thoughts and opinions can help to see where there is something missing, and something that may have been overlooked while reading.
Discussions and conversations about writing are also important. Having an idea does not mean it is easy to explain, and talking about it can help an idea truly come to life. Furthermore, others often have ideas on what can be added to an idea or other aspects of a topic that could be considered.
Finally, students shouldn’t spend days sitting and working in silence and by themselves. Discussions, debates and conversations are a fun way to liven up the day and to get students more involved in what they are working on. Communicating ideas will be highlighted in my ELA classroom.
